The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently released its comprehensive report on the state of crime in India for the year 2022. This report sheds light on significant trends, unveiling a mosaic of challenges and shifts in crime statistics.
Prevalence of Cybercrime
In the digital age, cybercrime has become a burgeoning concern. The report highlights a staggering 24.4% increase in cybercrimes, with 65,893 cases registered in 2022. The motives behind these cybercrimes are diverse, primarily driven by fraud (64.8%), followed by extortion and sexual exploitation.
Economic Offences on the Rise
Economic offences witnessed an 11.1% surge, totaling 1,93,385 cases in 2022. Among these, forgery, cheating, and fraud (FCF) took the lead with 1,70,901 cases. The report delves into the intricate details of economic offenses, including criminal breach of trust and counterfeiting.
Crimes Against Specific Demographics
The NCRB’s report brings attention to crimes against specific demographics. Crimes against Scheduled Castes (SCs) rose by 13.1%, while crimes against Scheduled Tribes (STs) increased by 14.3%. Additionally, crimes against senior citizens saw a significant 9.3% uptick.
Empirical Rise in Crimes Against Women
Crimes against women, a critical concern, exhibited a 4% increase in 2022, with 4,45,256 reported cases. The majority of cases involved cruelty by husbands or relatives (31.4%), followed by kidnapping, assault, and rape. The report underscores the need for targeted measures to address this societal challenge.
Overall Crime Trends and Registration Decline
The report provides a holistic overview of crime trends in 2022. While the total number of cognizable crimes was 58,24,946, there was a notable decline of 4.5% in crime registration compared to 2021. The crime rate per lakh population decreased from 445.9 in 2021 to 422.2 in 2022. The decline was more pronounced in Special & Local Laws (SLL) crimes.
Kidnapping and Abduction: A Growing Concern
The NCRB’s report signals a growing concern with a 5.8% increase in kidnapping and abduction cases, reaching a total of 1,07,588 in 2022. This escalation calls for a deeper exploration of the root causes and potential preventive measures.
