Every year, lakhs of post-graduates from all over the country, coming from different fields of study, register for the UGC NET exam. Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks in their master’s degree (first year candidates may also appear but should satisfy this condition in their final year) are eligible to take up this national level exam, conducted twice every year.
Although the candidates appearing for the exam are well aware of the fact that qualifying NET will somehow open doors for them, yet, many are still oblivious to what kind of opportunities lie beyond those doors. Through this exam, candidates may either qualify for the posts of Assistant Professor in various Indian universities/colleges, or qualify for both Assistant Professor as well as Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for pursuing research programs.

Opportunities after qualifying UGC NET-JRF:
If a career in research is what you have been aiming for, then qualifying NET-JRF will open numerous opportunities for you.
Qualified candidates can enrol themselves in M.Phil/ PhD programmes in any recognised university. In some central as well as private universities, candidates qualified for JRF are either given some extra marks or altogether exempted from the Ph.D entrance exams and are allowed to directly sit for the interview. The enrolled candidates will also become eligible to receive a financial assistance or fellowship for a maximum period of 5 years.
Nevertheless, in cases where the candidate does not wish to take up M.Phil/Ph.D courses immediately after their postgraduate program, can also opt for other funded research projects in their related fields, offered by various universities and organisations.
They are also eligible to apply for various other posts such as Junior Research Fellow, Project Fellow, Project Assistant, etc. The candidates should, therefore, be always on the lookout for vacancies of such posts.

Unfortunately, according to new governmental regulations, a Ph.D degree will be made mandatory for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professors in Universities with effect from 1st July, 2021. However, a postgraduate degree with NET will still continue to be the minimum eligibility for the direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professors in Colleges. Thus, UGC NET qualified candidates, without a doctoral degree, shall be eligible for the post of Assistant Professor in universities only up to 30th June, 2021.
Another opportunity to look out for is the post of Junior Research Fellow jobs or other similar posts at various universities. Although qualifying NET may not be mandatory in all the universities, however, it will give you an edge over the others. Qualified candidates can also opt to join a coaching institute or even start their very own, to train the aspirants for UGC-NET Exam.
Universities like Amity University, Galgotias University, G.D.Goenka, Sharda, TMU, LPU, Mody University, Adithya College, hire NET qualified candidates.
Opportunities in the Public Sector
Albeit the main set of opportunities for the qualifying candidates lie in the field of teaching and research, nonetheless, they can also join various public sector enterprises or PSUs such as NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Limited), BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited), ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation), etc., that consider the NET exam score to recruit candidates in the fields of HR, Finance, and Marketing.
UGC, for this purpose, has created its own job portal on which candidates seeking for jobs can create their profiles. In the meanwhile, recruiters like these PSUs can then browse the academic profiles of any of the registered qualified candidates and shortlist them for vacant positions.
