In a proactive step toward modernizing crime scene response and aligning with India’s new criminal laws, the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar (MBVV) Police have launched specially designed “I-Bikes”—motorcycles equipped with forensic evidence collection kits. This initiative supports the implementation of the Bhartiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which emphasizes timely and scientific collection of evidence in serious crimes punishable with imprisonment of seven years or more.
Forensics on Wheels
These investigation bikes—deployed in the Mira Road, Vasai, and Virar zones—are equipped with essential tools to collect vital forensic traces such as bloodstains, hair strands, fingerprints, saliva, and high-resolution photographs. These samples are handed over to the investigation officers and later sent to forensic laboratories for detailed analysis.
The I-Bikes were officially flagged off by Commissioner of Police, Madhukar Pandey, during the inauguration of the newly renovated Kashimira Police Station.
Tech-Driven Investigations
Under the BSA, which replaced the Indian Evidence Act in July 2024, trained personnel are now required not only to collect forensic evidence but also to record the entire collection process on camera. This footage becomes part of the trial, ensuring transparency and accuracy in judicial proceedings.
Currently, a dedicated team of 28 trained professionals is handling these kits. They are equipped with scientific knowledge and field expertise to carry out evidence collection while maintaining the integrity and chain of custody as per legal standards.
Why It Matters
This initiative marks a major leap in integrating forensic science and digital technology at the grassroots level of policing. It reinforces the need for speed, accuracy, and scientific rigor—qualities essential for successful investigations and convictions in today’s legal framework.
