In a tragic turn of events, three classmates of Ammu Sajeev, a 22-year-old nursing student from Government Nursing College, have been arrested in connection with her death. Ammu, a fourth-year student, allegedly fell from her hostel building on November 15.
The arrested students have been charged with abetment to suicide and are scheduled to appear in court by Friday afternoon. The arrests were made after the suspects were taken into custody from their homes and interrogated at the Pathanamthitta police station.
Family Alleges Foul Play
The arrests come after Ammu’s family filed a complaint alleging foul play. Her brother, Akhil Sajeev, strongly denied the possibility of suicide, accusing the college authorities and the arrested students of involvement in her death. Speaking to media outlets, Akhil reiterated his demand for a thorough investigation, emphasizing that his sister’s death was suspicious.
Investigation Developments
Pathanamthitta DySP Shri S. Nandakumar revealed that inconsistencies in the suspects’ statements, combined with evidence from phone records, were critical in their arrests. The police recovered a note from Ammu’s belongings that read “I Quit,” hinting at suicide. However, to determine its authenticity, the note has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis.
Additionally, a separate inquiry conducted by a team appointed by the Health University has concluded, and a report with recommendations to prevent similar incidents is expected next week.
Protests and Public Outcry
The incident has triggered widespread protests across the state. Student organizations such as SFI, ABVP, and KSU staged marches to the college in Chuttipara, demanding justice. The demonstrations escalated into violent clashes, adding to the tension surrounding the case.
Akhil Sajeev continues to insist that justice must be served, urging authorities to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth.
The Road Ahead
As the investigation unfolds, the police aim to establish the circumstances surrounding Ammu’s death. The incident has raised serious concerns about campus safety and the need for stringent measures to protect students. All eyes are now on the forensic analysis and the upcoming report from the Health University, which are expected to provide crucial insights into the case.
Authorities face mounting pressure from both Ammu’s family and the public to deliver justice and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
