Gujarat government has announced the appointment of Forensic Crime Scene Managers across all 112 SDPO (Sub Divisional Police Officer) and ACP (Assistant Police Commissioner) offices in the state. This visionary decision aims to bolster crime investigation procedures and improve conviction rates through the systematic application of forensic science.
State Police Chief Shri Vikas Sahay stated that this initiative, jointly undertaken by Gujarat Police and the Directorate of Forensic Science, is a significant step toward enhancing the quality of investigations. He expressed confidence that the results of this program would soon be evident, complementing ongoing efforts like the Conviction Rate Improvement Project, which is actively working to strengthen Gujarat’s justice delivery system.
Role of Forensic Crime Scene Managers
Forensic Crime Scene Managers will assist senior officers such as SDPOs and ACPs in supervising serious crime investigations. These managers will accompany officers to crime scenes, providing expert guidance in collecting, preserving, and analyzing scientific evidence.
As crime scene investigations require a high level of expertise, these managers will play a pivotal role in ensuring that physical evidence is accurately documented and securely maintained, adhering to proper chain-of-custody protocols. This specialized support is expected to streamline investigations and enhance the overall efficiency of the justice process.
Comprehensive Training Program
The Directorate of Forensic Science has designed a robust training program for the newly appointed managers. Training sessions will be conducted at the Forensic Science Labs in Gandhinagar, Surat, and Rajkot. The curriculum will cover:
- Crime scene management
- Importance of physical evidence and chain of custody
- Crime scene investigation procedures
- Collection and handling of specialized samples
- Use of electronic and digital evidence
With these advancements, Gujarat is setting a benchmark in leveraging forensic science to strengthen law enforcement and judicial processes, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to justice and public safety.
