Investigators uncovered compelling evidence on Sunday against Sanjay Roy, the main suspect in the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Forensic analysis revealed that blood and skin samples found under the victim’s fingernails were a perfect match with Roy’s, corroborating the injuries he sustained.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Saturday, urged the police to expedite the investigation, labeling it a “despicable crime.” In response, Kolkata Police sources indicated they were working diligently to accelerate the probe.
The forensic findings suggested that the victim, despite being half-asleep, fiercely resisted the attack, leaving deep scratches and injuries on Roy. A senior police official stated, “She fought back and inflicted injuries on the accused, which matched the forensic evidence collected from under her fingernails. We expect the final forensic report shortly.”
The postmortem report concluded that the cause of death was smothering and strangulation. It also noted bruises and abrasions on the victim’s face and neck. The report indicated that the accused had taken advantage of the victim’s deep sleep during the assault, although it contradicted earlier claims of collarbone and pelvis fractures.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Mr. Vineet Goyal assured transparency in the investigation, stating, “We have shared the postmortem report with the victim’s family and kept them informed of the progress.”
The police believe that Roy’s primary motive was sexual gratification and found no evidence of any prior relationship between the victim and the accused. However, this aspect remains under investigation. Authorities are also exploring a potential link to a previous altercation the victim had with a civic volunteer, though it is unclear if Roy was involved.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) plans to meet with the forensic experts on Monday to determine if the injuries on the victim were solely caused by Roy or if an accomplice might have been involved. This question is also a concern for the victim’s family, who suspect the involvement of an insider. The victim’s father expressed these concerns after meeting with an additional police commissioner, stating, “We suspect an insider’s role in this.”
Commissioner Goyal urged students and others with relevant information to come forward, assuring that all leads would be thoroughly investigated while advising caution against circulating rumors.
