History of Forensic Science

Forensic science traces its roots back to ancient civilizations, where rudimentary methods were employed for crime investigation. Forensic science is the application of scientific methods for the purposes of justice. Utilising science in legal cases is forensic science in a very generic sense. If we think of the ancient Eureka moment of Archimedes (44 BC) which is considered a pioneer case where science was first harnessed to solve a perplexing problem, forensic science is believed to be that old. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the field gained prominence, thanks to the pioneering work of individuals like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s inspiration for Sherlock Holmes – Dr. Joseph Bell. Current Status of Forensic Science in India

With the introduction of three Bills in the Lok Sabha to replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860; Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1898; and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 with Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya (BS) Bill, 2023 respectively.

There are as many as 313 changes proposed in the three criminal laws with the objective to ensure that people who approach the courts get justice within three years. Also, it has been made mandatory for a Forensic Science Officer to visit the crime scene of offences which have punishment of 7 years or more. That implies, criminal justice system is going to need you in the near future.

Eligibility for B.Sc Forensic Science

You need to have completed 10+2 or an equivalent examination in the science stream with a minimum of 50% marks.
