Today we have with us, Ms. DEVIKA G, who is an alumna of Jain University and has qualified M.Sc Forensic Science entrance exam of NFSU 2021.
Question – Hi Devika, Let me begin by first asking you about your childhood and schooling. Who all are there in the family and what are their professions?
Devika- Hello! I hail from Kerala. I was born and brought up in Tamil Nadu. I took up Bio-maths stream in high school and did my Bachelor’s in Forensic science (Hons) from Jain University in Bangalore. I have a younger sister who also lives with my parents in Tiruvannamalai. I have grown up in a family with business background.
Question- Tell our readers what made you think that Forensic Science is the career you want to pursue? Which all other entrance exams did you appear in and which all have you been able to qualify in?
Devika- It was during class-11, I came to know about Forensic science and got an irresistible fascination towards that subject even though I didn’t know the particulars of it. Almost the whole class knew about my desire to become a forensic scientist as I spoke about it every day! I expressed this interest to my parents and they agreed for that happily.
After my under graduation in 2021, I had applied in various government colleges like IFS Mumbai, GIFS Aurangabad and RRU.
Question – What all entrance exams did you appear for this year and what was your All India Rank, score/marks in the NFSU and other entrance exams?
Devika- I appeared for entrance exams in Sagar University, Delhi University, NFSU Delhi and NFSU Goa.
I secured AIR 5 in Sagar University and AIR 28 in Delhi university. I got AIR 7 (76/100) in NFSU goa and I decided to take admission in NFSU.
Question – How much time did you prepare for the exam?
In the 2nd year of UG, I started looking for a forum that offers guidance and coaching for MSc Forensic science Entrance exams and I found Forensics digest. I started my preparation with them since September, 2020.
However, in the 6th semester I wasn’t able to concentrate on it much due to my research works and final year exams. After my graduation, I had ample time to focus on my preparation.
Question – How should one prepare for the NFSU entrance exam and What should be the preparation strategy for self study?
Devika – As there is no single entrance exam syllabus/pattern that is followed by all the universities, the preparation for each exam is a little different.
For DUET, focusing on UG notes and practicing the questions asked in NET/JRF would be helpful.
For SAGAR, revising the UG notes according to the entrance syllabus given by the University would be adequate.
As far as NFSU entrance exam is concerned, the questions are asked from various disciplines of science. It is well framed to gauge the overall knowledge and awareness of the students in science.
To start with, all the units of biology, chemistry and physics of class 11 and 12 should be revised thoroughly. For this, NCERT book would be sufficient enough.
Quite a few questions can definitely be expected from the basics of genetics, instrumentation, space and astronomy, biochemistry, biotechnology, microbiology. A few questions are asked from forensic science which will be application based and not direct ones.
Practising GK science question sets of various competitive exams would greatly help in getting well-equipped for this entrance test. Any general science book can be purchased and I also recommend students to attempt questions on a few websites that offer science question sets in MCQ format with answers. Attempting multiple mock tests on general science topics would boost your confidence to tackle the real test and helps you to manage time.
Added to self-study, I attended weekly mock tests and other practice tests of science conducted by Forensics Digest and I suggest the same for all the aspirants since it helped me in being consistent to show up every week for mock test.
Question- Tell us the complete selection procedure for NFSU. Mention stages of exams, interview, document verification etc.
Devika-Coming to the selection procedure of NFSU, they select candidates for M.Sc. Forensic science on the basis of Entrance test conducted by the university. Based on entrance score, the selection is carried out. Once the merit list is out, the university conducts online counselling for the sake of campus selection as per our preference.
Usually, the interview isn’t a part of the selection process but it might vary every year. Physical document verification and submission would be done at the campus when the classes start offline.
Question- Our reader would be curious to know about what and how you are going to proceed from here ?
Devika- I believe, having a master’s degree alone doesn’t validate our mastery in that subject when it comes to handling criminal cases. So, I would like to work dedicatedly on gathering experience and knowledge. I am sure I will love this whole process of making my existence meaningful to the WORLD OF SCIENCE.
Question – Any advice for the budding forensic professionals?
Devika- For all the budding experts, do not think it’s impossible to flourish in this field. Since it is not humanly impossible, consider it to be within your reach.
Words do not suffice to express my gratitude to Forensics Digest for guiding me. From providing me with study materials, clearing doubts round the clock, till helping me in choosing the university, you have always been supportive and helpful. I am looking forward to learn and evolve more.
Thank you, Devika for your kind words and choosing us for your preparation. We are glad we could help you in some way in your journey in this beautiful field of forensic science. Forensics Digest wishes you best of luck in all you do.
